Abstract:

Portraits and other photographs of Frederick Schiller Faust; a few family photographs; views of Faust's residence in Florence, Italy; a few portraits of friends and associates; many motion picture and television publicity stills, especially for various versions of Dr. Kildare; photographs of promotional posters for films, including the Tom Mix serial The Untamed; two photographs of American Legion officers; and a photograph of the table of contents for an issue of Argosy which includes a serial entry by Max Brand. Among Faust's associates identified in the collection are agent Carl Brandt, critic Henry Seidel Canby, art collector Arthur Acton and possibly poet Stephen Vincent Benét. Celebrities depicted include Lionel Barrymore, Richard Chamberlain, Raymond Massey, Robert Young, Lew Ayres, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Errol Flynn, Jimmy Stewart, Marlene Dietrich, Andy Griffith, Dolores Gray and Priscilla Dean. Copy negatives duplicate images from the prints: Tom Mix promotional poster and American Legion photographs.

Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944) was an American author of westerns, historical romances, spy thrillers, mysteries, and poetry. Best known as "Max Brand," Faust signed at least eighteen pen-names to his writing, including George Challis and Evan Evans.
